QUESTION from the Cross family: "What is your daily schedule - timing wise?"

Answer: Let's see, that changes pretty often and especially seasonally, but basically we all head out in the morning to different areas. We stop for lunch, and finish our day around 8 pm this time of year.
Here's a basic outline of who's responsible for each area of the ranch this time of year:

Seth- oversee everything. Stockdog training, cattle rotations and business growth as well as maintenance, problem solving, and the custom milling, building and woodworking on the ranch. Fencing & irrigation and feeding.

Liam- raising hogs, farrowing sows and rotations through pastures and problem areas, as well as custom milling and wood products on the ranch, & marketing and shipping products / filling orders

Charise- farrowing sows, Lambing and flock rotations, as well as her line of natural cleaning products she makes. Cleaning tent and cabin rentals for farm stays and baking for guests, plus cattle rotation planning and fencing.

Rhian- farrowing sows, lambing and flock rotations, cleaning tents and cabin rentals for farm stays, bookkeeping for the ranch, and baking for guests, order prep and storekeeper.

Raini- milking cows, bookkeeping, marketing, customer care, inventory, website work, woodburning for custom wood gifts & guest prep/ cleaning for farm stays, and help with any needs when animals are having babies. Natural animal health care.

Thanks for your reply! There is so much work you all do on the ranch and running a couple different business on top of all that! We loved watching the video. Your property is gorgeous. I think we need to borrow your goats for our rose bushes too. They do a good job of making your property look like park.

Thank you my sister and I liked it very much. How do you train cattle dogs?

Thank you Sophia. I'm happy to hear that you both enjoyed it.

What a great question!
To train the cattle dogs, I start working with them as pups to teach them manners as you would other breeds and for cattle dogs, one of the foundational commands is lye down, so we really work on that.

From there, I start working with the pups natural instincts to herd animals and we practice moving goats because they are smaller.

When they are old enough and ready, I move to working on skills and commands with young cattle, teaching them, directional and other commands so that they understand what I'm asking them to do when we are out moving cattle, or other animals.

From that point on, it's just time, miles and experience for the dog.

Thank you for the great question Sophia!
